About the CBAAuxiliary

The Chattanooga Bar Association Auxiliary (CBAA) was founded in 1966 to support the legal community. Since its establishment, the CBAA has supported the Chattanooga and Tennessee Bar Associations, encouraged association among members of the legal profession and their families, and organized projects or activities that benefit our community.

In 1977, the CBAA began its association with the Chambliss Home after Juvenile Court Judge Dixie Smith praised the Chambliss Home’s efforts in caring for neglected and abused children in Chattanooga. Initially, the CBAA’s work with the Chambliss Home consisted of a few volunteers visiting the home once a week.

In the early 1980's, with the help of the Junior League of Chattanooga (volunteers), Siskin Rehabilitation Hospital (training), and The Lupton Fund (money for equipment), the CBAA decided to expand the project into an Enrichment Program. The program was held four mornings per week for the school age children living at the home.

In 1990 the CBAA received a plaque recognizing hours of hands-on service that improved the Chambliss Home/Chambliss Shelter (CHCS-1983). Shortly thereafter, in 1991 President Bush named the Shelter as one of his “Thousand Points of Light.”

Presently the CBAA has three main areas of focus; supporting legal education in Hamilton County, providing a financial donation to the CHCS, and promoting social relationships among our members and their spouses.

In 1998, the CBAA chose to focus on the promotion of legal education in our community. With the help of Flo Summitt, the booklet, When You Become 18 in Tennsessee: A Guide for Young Adults, was first published. The Book 18 as it is commonly referred to, is distributed every fall to all Hamilton County Seniors to inform them of their rights under Tennessee Law, as well as their responsibilities as citizens.  Gaining citywide attention, Book 18 is now being distributed to other appropriate agencies for use in various legal education programs. Book 18 includes chapters on subjects such as voting, marriage, divorce, child support, date rape, consumer protection, contract obligation and establishing credit. Book 18 also identifies the appropriate local agencies to contact for further information on particular subjects. CBAA raises money exclusively from within the legal community to pay for the printing of the book.

Throughout the 1990's and into the present day the CBAA continues to provide support to the CHCS in the form of financial contributions for the psychological counseling of residents, as well as donations of clothing and supplies. Held in February, the Annual Penny Auction is the CBAA’s primary fundraiser for the CHCS.

CBAA has hosts a number of events that promote social relationships among the CBAA members and their spouses. Monthly events include lunches programs held in members’ homes as well as area clubs and restaurants, a couples’ social night, the Penny Auction, and the annual Fall Wine Tasting.

CBAA works closely with the Chattanooga Bar Association to support the Chattanooga legal community to the best of its ability.
